Huntsville is home to several unique venues for all types of meetings and occasions. Whether you’re hosting a conference at the Jackson Center, or attending TBEX North America 2017 at the Von Braun Center, you will always find something to “meet” your needs. This includes the most up-to-date and well-designed athletic facilities.
The Rocket City has always prided itself on being innovative and open to creating new and exciting opportunities for residents and visitors alike. And this summer, Huntsville will be the only city in the South with two Olympic-sized pools within the same complex—the Brahan Spring Natatorium. Once renovations are completed, the natatorium will have three pools – the Instructional Pool, the Legacy Pool, and the Competition Pool (which can accommodate seating for up to 1,400 spectators).
Plans to update the facility started as a renovation project in 2015, and it has become something that truly sets the city apart. The natatorium will be opening its second Olympic-sized pool to lap swimming, training and competitive swim meets. The new pool will be 7 feet deep, and will be surrounded by 1,400 seats to accommodate major competition crowds. And those crowds will be comfortable watching any of the competitions that the pool is reserved for, because the enclosure will be heated and air conditioned, as well.
But that’s not all the renovation will bring! The construction of a new instructional pool for anyone with arthritis and other health issues is underway. This will also be used for swim lessons and group aquatic classes. The pool will be heated to a consistent 80 degrees, and will replace the James A. Williams Aquatic Center, according to the full report by al.com. The James A. Williams Aquatic Center will close once the instructional pool is open.
The 40-year-old natatorium is busy as ever. In fact, it served more than 67,000 swimmers in 2014 alone. With the constant traffic coming and going, the facility will also add a modern brick and glass façade, renovate the lobby area, and update the existing locker rooms. The exterior of the building will include brick, metal wall panels and glass curtain wall.
Construction will also include a new 264-space parking lot, outdoor planters, landscaping and a lakeside terrace area with stained concrete and fabric canopy cover.
All of these amenities and updates are tentatively scheduled to be available in June or July 2017. We will see you there!
